In his sixth album, Hugh Coltman grapples with his shadows. Grief, fatherhood, a midlife crisis, and the vertigo of the times: the rock crooner with the oh-so-British accent doesn’t hold back. Adorned with jazz, folk, and blues, his intensely poetic songs hit you right in the heart.
Recorded in one of the spacious rooms of the La Frette mansion near Paris, where the Arctic Monkeys had just completed their latest album, Good Grief brings back the elements that made Night Trippin’ a success, with the same team: live takes without headphones, with everyone in the same room and minimal overdubs. This setup, as close to the music as possible, reveals the raw truth, intentions, and essence of each of the ten songs. ‘It was important to work as a group, for everyone to be present 24/7, solely focused on this,’ Hugh reveals.
